The James Bond movie franchise has lasted for half a century. Every few years, a new Bond film would be released and people would go and have a good time. There's was no real continuity in the films. Just one stand alone adventure after another.
Except for the Daniel Craig as James Bond films. Now, we have a movie series. Casino Royale shows us a James Bond who's just received his Double-O status. And it was a good film. Not as fanciful as the previous Bond films, but a more realistic version of Bond. But then came Quantum of Solace. This is a direct sequel, picking up the story mere moments after CR ended. This movie is a poor follow-up to CR, but the biggest problem with Quantum of Solace is that you need to have seen CR for QoS to make any sense at all. Never before have we had that in a Bond film. Next comes Skyfall. This can be viewed as a stand-alone film, which is good. Up until now, Bond has just been a super-spy. Male movie goers lived vicariously through him. Female movie goers liked his suave confidence. However, I think Skyfall saddles Bond with too much baggage. Suddenly, we're given some insight into his past. Bond has become a character rather than an idea. And now, in late 2015, we have the newest Bond film, Spectre. I have not yet seen this film but, thanks to the Interwebs, I know some things about it. We have more character development and references to the events of the previous three films. The problem, in my opinion, will come when another actor becomes James Bond. Will they go back to unrelated stand-alone films? Will there be talk of "rebooting?" If Idris Elba (or other non-white actor) becomes James Bond), will the fan-theory that 'James Bond is just a code name' become canon? I don't know. But the fact that I have all these questions is disheartening. And can we PLEASE get another motive other than personal revenge?
